IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – SOCIETY

A government has a responsibility to its citizens to ensure their safety. Therefore, some people think that the government should increase spending on defense but spend less on social benefits.

To what extent do you agree?

In today’s uncertain world, the safety and security of citizens should be a top priority for any government. It is argued by some that governments should increase spending on defense while reducing expenditure on social benefits. While I agree that ensuring the safety of citizens is crucial, I believe that a balanced approach is necessary.

Firstly, it is undeniable that defense spending plays a vital role in safeguarding a nation’s sovereignty and protecting its citizens from external threats. In an era where terrorism and geopolitical tensions are prevalent, governments must allocate sufficient resources to maintain a strong military force. Adequate defense funding ensures the readiness of armed forces to respond swiftly and effectively to any potential danger.

However, prioritizing defense spending at the expense of social benefits would be detrimental to society as a whole. Social benefits such as healthcare, education, and welfare programs are essential for the well-being and development of citizens. Neglecting these areas can lead to increased inequality, poverty rates, and reduced access to basic necessities.

Instead of choosing one over the other, governments should strive for a balanced approach by allocating funds proportionally based on societal needs. This means maintaining adequate defense spending while also investing in social programs that enhance citizen’s quality of life.

In conclusion, while ensuring citizen safety is paramount for any government, it should not come at the cost of neglecting social benefits entirely. A balanced approach that allocates resources appropriately will better serve both national security interests and the well-being of its citizens
