IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – SHOPPING

Shopping is the favourite free time activity for many young people today.

Why do you think this has happened?
Should young people be encouraged to do different activities in their free time rather than shopping?

Shopping has become the favorite free time activity for many young people today due to various reasons. Firstly, the rise of consumer culture and materialism has played a significant role in shaping their preferences. Youngsters are constantly bombarded with advertisements that promote the latest trends and products, leading them to believe that shopping is essential for social acceptance and personal fulfillment.

Undoubtedly, shopping provides an escape from boredom and monotony. With the advent of online shopping, young people can easily browse through countless options and make purchases without leaving their homes. This convenience factor makes it an attractive option for leisure time.

However, it is crucial to encourage young people to engage in different activities during their free time rather than solely focusing on shopping. Engaging in diverse activities helps individuals develop a well-rounded personality and acquire new skills or knowledge. For instance, participating in sports promotes physical fitness and teamwork while reading enhances critical thinking abilities.

Furthermore, excessive shopping can lead to financial burdens and contribute to environmental degradation due to overconsumption. Encouraging young people to explore alternative activities such as volunteering or pursuing creative hobbies not only benefits them personally but also contributes positively towards society.

In conclusion, while shopping may be a popular pastime among young people today due to societal influences and convenience factors, it is essential to encourage them to diversify their leisure activities. By engaging in different pursuits, they can develop holistically as individuals while contributing positively towards society’s well-being.
