IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – MEDIA

Some people say that all popular TV programmes should aim to educate viewers about important social issues.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In today’s society, television has become a powerful medium that influences and shapes our thoughts and opinions. Some argue that all popular TV programs should aim to educate viewers about important social issues. However, I disagree with this statement to a certain extent.

While it is crucial for television programs to address social issues, it is unrealistic to expect every popular show to solely focus on education. Television serves various purposes, including entertainment and escapism. People often watch TV as a means of relaxation and enjoyment after a long day at work or school. Therefore, it is essential for TV shows to strike a balance between educating viewers and providing entertainment value.

Moreover, not all viewers are receptive to educational content. Some may find it boring or preachy, leading them to switch channels or lose interest in the program altogether. By subtly incorporating educational elements into popular shows, producers can engage a wider audience without compromising on entertainment value.

However, this does not mean that television should completely ignore important social issues. It is vital for networks to allocate airtime for documentaries, talk shows, or news segments dedicated explicitly to addressing these concerns. This way, viewers who are genuinely interested in learning about social issues can have access to informative content while still enjoying their favorite entertaining programs.

In conclusion, while I believe that television should play a role in educating viewers about important social issues, expecting all popular TV programs to solely focus on education is impractical. Striking a balance between education and entertainment is necessary for engaging audiences effectively without alienating them from the medium altogether.
