IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – GOVERNMENT

Violent TV shows and aggressive video games should be banned on a government level.

Do you agree or disagree?

In today’s society, the prevalence of violent TV shows and aggressive video games has raised concerns about their impact on individuals, particularly children. While some argue that it is a matter of personal choice and responsibility, I firmly believe that these forms of media should be banned on a governmental level due to their potential negative consequences.

Firstly, extensive research has consistently shown a strong correlation between exposure to violent media and increased aggression in individuals. Studies have demonstrated that prolonged exposure to violent TV shows and video games can desensitize viewers, leading to an acceptance of violence as a norm. This normalization can contribute to the development of aggressive behavior patterns in both children and adults.

Secondly, young minds are highly impressionable, making them more susceptible to the influence of violent media. Children often lack the cognitive abilities necessary to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Consequently, exposure to graphic violence can distort their perception of acceptable social behavior, potentially leading to real-life acts of aggression.

Moreover, proponents may argue that parents should take responsibility for monitoring their children’s media consumption. However, not all parents possess the knowledge or resources required for effective supervision. A governmental ban would ensure protection for all children regardless of parental capabilities or awareness.

Given the well-documented negative effects associated with violent TV shows and aggressive video games on individuals’ behavior, it is imperative that governments take action by implementing bans at a national level. By doing so, we can safeguard our society from unnecessary harm while promoting healthier alternatives for entertainment and recreation.
