IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – FOOD

Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.

Do you agree or disagree?

I strongly agree that sugary products should be made more expensive in order to encourage people to consume less sugar. The high levels of sugar found in many manufactured food and drink products have been linked to numerous health problems, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and tooth decay. By increasing the price of these products, it would deter individuals from purchasing them as frequently or in large quantities.

One of the main reasons why sugary products are so popular is their affordability. Many people opt for these items because they are cheap and easily accessible. However, by making them more expensive, it would force consumers to think twice before buying them. This would ultimately lead to a decrease in consumption and subsequently a reduction in health problems associated with excessive sugar intake. Moreover, higher prices on sugary products could also generate revenue that could be used towards public health initiatives. This money could be invested in educational campaigns about the dangers of consuming too much sugar or subsidizing healthier alternatives such as fruits and vegetables.

Critics may argue that making sugary products more expensive unfairly targets low-income individuals who rely on these affordable options. However, it is important to consider the long-term costs of poor health due to excessive sugar consumption. By discouraging the purchase of sugary products through higher prices, we can promote healthier lifestyles and reduce healthcare costs associated with treating diet-related diseases.

In conclusion, increasing the price of sugary products is an effective strategy to encourage people to consume less sugar. It not only addresses the growing health problems caused by excessive sugar intake but also generates revenue for public health initiatives. By taking this step towards reducing our society’s reliance on unhealthy food choices, we can improve overall well-being and create a healthier future for generations to come.
