IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – CHILDREN

Some people believe that children should be banned from using their phones during the school day. Others believe that children should be allowed to use their phones.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

In today’s digital age, the use of smartphones has become ubiquitous among people of all ages, including children. However, there is a growing debate about whether children should be allowed to use their phones during the school day or if they should be banned from doing so.

Those in favor of banning phone usage argue that it can be a distraction for students, hindering their ability to focus on their studies. They believe that phones can disrupt the learning environment and lead to decreased academic performance. Additionally, some argue that excessive phone use can have negative effects on children’s social skills and overall well-being.

On the other hand, proponents of allowing phone usage during school hours argue that smartphones can be valuable educational tools. They believe that with proper guidance and supervision, phones can enhance learning by providing access to educational apps, online resources, and interactive learning platforms. Moreover, allowing students to use their phones during breaks or free periods can help them stay connected with their families and emergency situations.

In my opinion, a balanced approach is necessary. While it is important to minimize distractions in the classroom setting and promote focused learning, completely banning phone usage may not be practical or beneficial in today’s technology-driven world. Instead, schools should establish clear guidelines regarding when and how phones can be used during the school day. This way, students can benefit from the educational opportunities provided by smartphones while also maintaining a productive learning environment.
