IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – ADVERTISING

Violence in the media promotes violence in society.

To what extent do you agree?

Violence in the media has become a prevalent topic of discussion in recent years, with many arguing that it promotes violence in society. While some may argue that there is no direct correlation between media violence and real-life aggression, I firmly believe that exposure to violent content can indeed influence individuals to engage in violent behavior.

Firstly, numerous studies have shown a clear link between media violence and aggressive behavior. Research conducted by psychologists such as Bandura and Anderson consistently demonstrate that exposure to violent media increases the likelihood of aggressive actions. This is particularly concerning when considering the impact on vulnerable populations such as children and adolescents, who are more susceptible to external influences.

Moreover, the desensitization effect caused by repeated exposure to violence cannot be ignored. When individuals are constantly exposed to violent imagery through movies, video games, or even news reports, they become desensitized to its impact. This normalization of violence can lead individuals to view aggression as an acceptable means of conflict resolution. Additionally, media plays a significant role in shaping societal norms and values. When acts of violence are glorified or portrayed as heroic in movies or television shows, it sends a dangerous message that violence is an effective solution. This distorted portrayal can influence impressionable minds and perpetuate a cycle of violence within society.

However, it is important to acknowledge that media alone cannot be solely blamed for promoting violence in society. There are various other factors at play, such as family environment, peer influence, and mental health issues that contribute to aggressive behavior.

In conclusion, while some may argue against the notion that violence in the media promotes violence in society; evidence suggests otherwise. The link between exposure to violent content and increased aggression cannot be denied. It is crucial for policymakers and parents alike to recognize this connection and take the necessary measures to regulate the amount of violent content accessible by vulnerable populations, such as children. By doing so, we can work towards creating a safer society where individuals are not influenced by media violence to engage in harmful behaviors.
