IELTS WRITING TASK 1 – TABLE

The two tables show the number of international students from different resource countries in Canada and the USA in two school years. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

An overview of the number of foreign students attending schools in the USA and Canada between 2002 and 2004 can be found in the tables provided. Compared to Canada, the United States is clearly the destination of choice for international students.

Overall, international students in the USA decreased while those in Canada increased, although the former number was greater than the latter.

Over the course of the two academic years, the overall number of foreign students in Canada rose by 17%, from roughly 60,000 to 70,000. The largest difference between the three resource countries was the 45 percent increase in the proportion of Chinese students. There was an increase of 9% and 35% in the USA and India, respectively.

But from over 580,000 students in 2002 to 2004, the overall number of foreign students decreased by 2%. China and Canada accounted for about 6% of the total number of international students. In contrast, despite being the largest resource country in the USA, the number of Indian students decreased by 9% over these two school years.
