Altogether, there is an increased tendency in all three motivations for travelling overseas. Specifically, for the most part of the last two decades, visitors who came for vacation outnumbered those who came for other reasons.
In 1989, around 6.5 million individuals visited the United Kingdom on vacation. This figure climbed swiftly and peaked at 9 million by 1997 before plummeting sharply to 6.5 million in 2004. Following then, the number of visitors increased steadily, reaching a high of 9 million in 2009.
Meanwhile, business and social travels to the UK followed very identical patterns, beginning with 3.5 million and 5 million, respectively, in 1989 and gradually increasing to 6–7 million in 2009. In each of these scenarios, the number of visitors thereafter decreases. During the specified time period, more people did business than visited family and friends.
